Giant Level on the pin box! Old camper had a giant Hoppy level above the pin box. Either way, very handy to have were it can be easily seen. SteveB

crappie, What year is your MINI? Thread specific: Ellie it sounds like you have the controller loose in the bracket. It should not be loose. The self leveling is in the internal circuitry. Follow crappie_fisherman's advice. SteveB

I think it was HotRod.com or some such membership thing a few years back that did something similar. It was supposed to save 5 cents a gallon. When it went out of business I never got all my money back which just about was the amount I saved over the short time I had it. I vote SCAM, unless you can get a quick benefit and bail before they go out of business. SteveB

RE: 5th Airborne install by myself?

I installed mine by myself in about an hour without much trouble. I put the 5thAB into the hitch then blocked up the back. One thing is that the truck has to be perfectly centered under the box mount. It is not that easy. Also, be careful of any wiring that is located inside the box mount. One wrong move and the wiring will be cut. As far as lifting it up, once its in the back of the truck, you only need to lift half the weight to get it into the hitch. Its not that bad. I also installed mine 2 sets of holes higher than the old hitch and it sits level. Measure the old one first. SteveB

1: Another 5th Airborne owner. It worked out great for my setup. 2: A screw could have nicked a 12V wire. Putting in a 30A fuse is BAD. 3: What everyone else said. Happy new camper! SteveB

First Pull With 5th Airborne Pinbox

This past weekend I finally had the opportunity to put my new 5th Airborne pinbox to the test. It performed very well and I now feel that it was worth the expense to change out the old stock box. I was used to towing a relatively lightweight trailer with a relatively heavy truck. The towing was pretty smooth with the old Dutchmen to the point of having the proverbial "forgot its back there" thoughts. The much heavier Jayco has a completely different feel and when I started towing it, the chucking was pretty severe. I added shocks and our first long trip to PA proved that it was the right move. The only issue I had left was the front of the trailer beating down on the truck. There was minimal chucking remaining so after contemplating the MorRyde and the 5th Airborne I decided on the 5th AB because of the enclosed air spring and shock. The combo is now better than the Dutchmen. I can't believe I'm saying this but stuff left on the RK counter was still there after the trip. Even with the shocks alone, stuff would slide off. I did the install myself which was uneventful. I have pics if anyone is interested. I believe these different pinbox designs are all good and they have their niche applications. It is too much trouble and expense (IMO) to try different ones so I would suggest starting with suspension control first. After that, feel it out and if its fixed then save the cash for gas! If there is still a lot of chucking then maybe the MorRyde style is the best choice. Lastly if it feels like the front is pounding (you would know) then the 5th AB should fine tune the ride and make towing a tolerable (if not fun) experience. Hope this helps. SteveB

RE: Adding a battery charger

Problem is that when the generator is running or the shore power is connected there will be 2 chargers suppling power to the battery, the SS-210 AND the ELX-45. This can't be good. I'd would not mind just pluging in the charger when it is needed but as soon as I turn on the generator the ELX-45 is going to try to charge the battery. No there would not be 2 chargers running because you do not connect the extension cord to run the Schumacher. You only use the Schumacher when the camper is in storage or you don't want to run the converter for some reason. During the winter I use a small Schumacher charger to maintain the battery in my 5er. I plug it in thru the umbilical cord and run an extension to the charger. Next step will be to tie the charger permanently to the 12VDC in a safe place (basement) and only use it as needed. I never plug in both shore and charger at the same time. SteveB

Dockside, What if you wire the new Schumacher to the 12V side and run a 110 feed with access outside the camper so that you can plug it in only when needed? The HOME stores and McMaster sell a "motor" connector that is a wall mount male end of the 110 outlet, with a flap cover, that you can safely plug the extension into. SteveB

cdman, I had a '94 Dutchman with an Atwood water heater and it used the standard 1/2" plug. Chances are that someone modified the original in some way as doug stated. The old plug looks like it might be a metric straight thread. SteveB

Hi Ed, I meant the NY EZPass system as the gov't entity. The Cross Sound Ferry has been great! Have you taken your 5er on the ferry? They charge by the foot don't they? There are an awful lot of trucks filled with rocks that go on the ferry. I took a pic of the truck next to me in the John H. One ferry must have had 5 trucks with rocks that disembarked at Orient Point (probably common for them) when I was waiting about a month ago. The North Fork is really nice. I've been to Legends Restaurant a couple of times. SteveB

HedoT, You could have a blue tag for your application. It would just be for a commercial account. I could get tags for my car and 1/2 ton on the same account. My "towing" tag has a sticker on it that says pickup towing a 2 axle trailer, tag vehicle code 211 (4H pickup). Yours should be listed for your SUV towing a 2 axle trailer. Tag vehicle code should be 080 (4L SUV). SteveB

Hi Ed, I've been using the CSF a bit lately. This past Thursday the guy taking the tickets on the Orient Point side commented on how I was "back again". My Dodge 1500 is an unusual color so I guess its easy to remember. It cost $95 and change but it is the easiest way to access our customers on LI. I just called the 800 number from the web site so I guess I got lucky. I really thought that it would be a hassle . Bluefreight, I have blue tags and a commercial account so you are probably correct. My experience with the NY EZ Pass system. I am from RI and have a NY EZ Pass because I tow over the Tap. My truck is registered as commercial in RI even though I am not a business. That's the way it is. It is over 7000 pounds GVWR and dual wheel. I had to get a commercial EZ Pass account to start with, then at the same time I filled out the form to receive the special discounted 4H Tag for the truck/5er combo. I had some questions before I sent in the form and every single person I spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful. When I got my tags it was obvious that they sent the wrong discount tag (it was for a VAN) I called and I had the correct tag in a week. When I returned the wrong tag I neglected to wrap it in foil and got charged for 2 tolls that the mail truck went thru. I called about it but they only reimbursed 1 toll. My screw-up. The second thing that got me was when I went thru the Del Water Gap toll on 80. The cash lane is $1.50 for the truck and trailer but the commercial EZ Pass gets charged over $9. They would not fix that one so I do not use the Tag thru DWG tolls. The Garden State Parkway is not a problem. I have checked with other possible toll roads (on-line info) locally (MA, NH, NJ, MD)and it appears that the DWG is the only one that charges outrageous commercial rates for the EZ-pass. I need to call MassPike and NH just to confirm, though. All in all it has been fairly smooth with the discount tag ($10.12 at the Tap instead of a potential $22.25). Everyone I've spoken to has been very helpful and friendly. It is really nice to pass by the long lines at the cash lanes! ON EDIT= I read somewhere on the NYEZPASS web site that NY discount rates only apply to accounts issued by NYS. It can be very difficult to find info on that web site so if you find something of interest, make sure you print it out or bookmark it for future reference. SteveB

Hi Rick, I think that a 500 watt load at 12VDC is about 40 amps. It is only 4.2 amps at 120V. It is not a direct translation from DC to AC though. None of the 500 watt units that I've seen has a cig plug but a couple of direct wire terminals. That could be why Jayco is advising against it. SteveB

Is your speedo working correctly? The easy cause could be the speed sensor in the rear end housing. Beyond that, a code reader may be needed. SteveB

Your planned route will work out well. You will avoid the Tappan Zee Bridge and will cross the Hudson further North on the Newburg Bridge. I think that some sections of 84 through Danbury can be a white knuckle experience due to road construction but it is the same on 287 between 684 and 95. I find the route 80/287/Tappan Zee/95 to be quicker and less hilly than 80/287/87/84/691/66/9/95 but either will get you to the same place. Either way can get bogged down in traffic depending on the day and time. I think the toll on the Tap is more than Newburg. SteveB
